Hamilton Vintage Community Pop Up {Oct 28 @ Spice Factory #hamont}

When we first moved back to Hamilton, we never expected our humble hometown would turn into such a vintage mecca!

Just last year, our friends at Vintage Soul Geek provided some of their impeccable vintage garments for the filming of a little movie called “The Shape of Water” which was both nominated for Best Costume Design, and went on to win Best Picture at the Academy Awards amongst many other accolades.

With such a rich history, its not surprising that Hamilton, Ontario is full of true love for the vintage lifestyle. After all, we are all shopping at the same mall or big box shops to see the same things – derivatives of vintage styles whether it be furniture, decor, accessories, or fashion! Why spend your money on cheap, expensive, knock-offs when you can get the real thing ?!

That’s why, we are so excited to be taking part in the Hamilton Vintage Community Pop-Up this Sunday October 28 at The Spice Factory from 10a – 4p! With over 40+ vintage vendors, plus free admission, we know we are looking forward to a brilliant day of vintage shopping, and meeting and making connections with fellow vintage lovers in the city.

We will have a rack of select mens and women’s clothing priced as low as $5, so definitely if you are looking for something to do on a Sunday afternoon, be sure to check it out! Here’s a link to the event:

Follow Hamilton Vintage Community of Instagram!

This group is a lovely community of vintage lovers so if that’s your jam, be sure to check them out on Facebook also.

Hope to see you Sunday! And if you aren’t local and still want to shop, visit us on Etsy in our {SHOP}. XIXIXI gets you 25% OFF.

Music Minute: Krzysztof Komeda “Rosemary’s Baby Interlude”

Rosemarys-Baby-p01

Setting Up For Stan- Rosemary's Baby- Scream

“A chance to sit quietly and find out who you are; where you’ve been and where you’re going.”

-Ira Levin, Rosemary’s Baby

{published in 1967}

I called this an interlude because of its sauntering sweet nature between the high stakes and drama that is”Rosemary’s Baby”.

Polanski’s iconic film had many claiming he had beckoned the murder of his glamorous superstar wife, Sharon Tate just months following the film’s release, with this chilling tale of a wife sold to a coven of witches to give birth to the child of Satan!

The track is featured in a montage of Rosemary’s gleefully completing the contemporary turn-over of her new apartment (just before receiving a visit from her eccentric neighbour, Minnie).

The myth of the curse on the film was further perpetuated when John Lennon was murdered just outside the historic and now notorious Dakota building (below) just across the street from Central Park in New York City.

Seting Up For Satan- Rosemary's Baby-The Dakota

3. a musical composition inserted between the parts of a longer composition, a drama, or a religious service

So enjoy this brief interlude, and sail away with this new vintage classic. . .

THE 80s ARE BACK! 20 RAD 1980s MOVIE POSTER DESIGNS !!! [STRANGER THINGS FEVER]

stranger-things-poster

There have been stranger things in this world than the fact that STRANGER THINGS has become such a huge pop culture phenomenon this year. The second we gazed at the itsy bitsy teaser I knew that something special was in store.

cool-as-fuck-winona-ryder

cool-as-fuck-winona-ryder-2

Plus, the fact that it was starring pop culture Queen Winona Ryder, it was just so clear!

If you’re familiar with us, you know that we firmly believe that portals of the past are always open and ready to influx the present, and in the end, help shape the future, and STRANGER THINGS is the perfect example of this.

From the second the show opens with its cavernous rumbling synths and the panning electric red Stephen King-esque font comes into full view, the homage to classic 80s horror occult thrillers is ignited. What follows is a roller coaster ride that has erupted a fever for this brilliantly branded nostalgia.

Nostalgia is the key to this show, and for those who think the past is best left in the past, you might want to reconsider those thoughts, and give this show a shot at infiltrating the imagination with the beauty and wonder that the past has to offer.

We were inspired by the show’s epic 80s style illustrated poster to take a look back at some of the artful posters of films from the 1980s, and how their graphic quality still stands up to this day.

We made a list of 20, and hope it helps sparks some neurons!

Commercial Break: Seventies Style Orgy – “Baba Yaga” (1973)

Baba Yaga 1973- The Eye Wonders Baba Yaga 1973- shot through the heart and youre too late - vintage fashion film inspiration Baba Yaga 1973- illustrated title

Perhaps its the fashion photographer protagonist . . . or maybe the sexy 1970s set decor; most definitely attribute the funky score by Piero Umiliani (you know him – “Mah Nà Mah Nà”), as well as the brilliant presence of film legend, Carroll Baker (“The Watcher in the Woods“, “Babydoll“), and those quirky illustrations that appear, throughout the film – “Baba Yaga” is a bit of a shit show, but a wonderfully unique and stylish one, at that.

I thought Daily Grindhouse summed it up best:

Carroll Baker (BABY DOLL, THE WATCHER IN THE WOODS) is the titular stranger who is all sexed up with hunger for some female flesh. Baba Yaga sets her sights on fashion photographer Valentina Rosselli (Isabelle De Funes) after a chance encounter and soon pays a visit to her humble abode to deliver a doll dressed in some S&M gear for “protection”. After the visit, Valentina’s life is turned upside down; she is suddenly surrounded by death, hallucinations, Nazis (?), and more naked women than a Las Vegas casino. Of the four I prefer the naked women… just sayin’.

It’s these bizarre, unusual, and unexpected (perhaps, even absurd) elements that make a cult classic like this one to remember! You can totally read this film (even just the trailer) for clues on seventies style, and how timeless one can really make it. Love the stripes, the furs, the bobs, the rings . . . love it all! Even the menswear is pretty sublime.

Baba Yaga 1973-creepy vintage bondage doll Baba Yaga 1973- carroll baker holds the eye that freezes time

Did I mention there’s witches? You probably gathered, by now. After all – “Baba Yaga” literally translates to Devil Witch! So, sit back and enjoy the sumptuous feast of the best vintage, stylish, erotic, exploitation, sleaze in three and half minutes you’re bound to find on the internet!

Enjoy the pictures, too.

They really capture the little moments that make this one worth remembering.

[special thanks to Rock! Shock! Pop!]

The Eye of Faith has got you covered! We sift through the shit, to find you the good stuff.

Don’t forget to share with friends. I’m sure they will get a kick.

Seventies glamour is going to be right back in swing.

Or already is? Or never wasn’t?

Just brush up.

{PHOTOBLAST} My Demon Brother . . .

“Fear not at all; fear neither men nor Fates, nor gods, nor anything. Money fear not, nor laughter of the folk folly, nor any other power in heaven or upon the earth or under the earth. “

[Book of the Law: Chapter 2, Line 53]

Seems like the invocation went well last night.

Our demon brother walks the Earth, tempting the weak at heart and empowering the brave. We wanted to bring this PHOTOBLAST back to the hermetic roots of our wayward journey, and raise the demon brother in us all.

 n. De-mon [dmn]

1. an evil supernatural being; a devil.

2. A persistently tormenting person, force, or passion.

3. One who is extremely zealous, skillful, or diligent.

4. Genius.

The word ‘demon’ has quite an interesting origin in the realm of man. Before gathering itself as a symbol of supernatural evil, the word came from the Greek , Daemon. The wise Plato invested great interest in these mysterious spirits.  These metaphysical beings, who held a state between God and Mortal were “interpreting and transporting human things to the gods and divine things to men; entreaties and sacrifices from below, and ordinances and requitals from above…”

Plato believed that allotted to every man and woman, a daemon would distribute destinies and wisdom to us all. Call it, a conscience of man. Plato would eventually have charges laid against him for “”corrupting the young, and by not believing in the gods in whom the city believes, but in other daimonia that are novel.”

“Man tells his aspiration in his God; but in his demon he shows his depth of experience.”

-Margaret Fuller

So, dare not fear your demon brother, my friends, for there is indeed a voice that binds man in the form of the night.  If we are all things at once, infinite, a journey to the dark is a quest to find your heart. For wrestling in the soul of man is a struggle bigger than that of you or I.

There is mythical genius in all of us, and what better way to display your gifts of knowledge than with the very threads you wear.  The struggle is to find pride in your sacred identity, whatever that it may be.  So don’t get mad if you find your own demon brother giving you tips on a star-filled night. He might just know a thing or two.

Setting Up For Satan: Fresh Design Tips for a New “Aeon”

“Rosemary’s Baby” remains one of the single most affecting, and stylish films to ever grace the silver screen. Based on the bestselling novel by Ira Levin (“The Stepford Wives”), the film serves up the frightening tale of an innocent young couple pulled deep into a darkness once imaginable in the heart of New York City.

Many argue the darkness still purveys more than ever in urban sprawls all over the world. No longer should you fear the woods at night, as much as the threat of our own neighbours, and the things we can’t see, that has begun to send shivers up your spine. As Gary Indiana of the Village Voice describes:

“The movie appeared at a moment of optimum spiritual chaos in American life. Rosemary’s Baby remains an iconic memory trace of a time when anything seemed possible, including the birth of the Anti-Christ”.

The fear still prevails more than ever in these times, and many would argue that SATAN can be found everywhere we look these days; television, film, books, and of course, FASHION.

But, paranoid speculation aside, perhaps one of the greatest aspects of Roman Polanski’s 1968 classic, is the devilishly divine design by Richard Sylbert. Setting the film in the both epic and ominous Dakota Building in New York City, Sylbet acts on the trends and compulsions of the time that really give definition to Rosemary’s characterization.

Prim and proper Rosemary- the picture of perfection, really. From her committed DIY efforts around the apartment, to her of-the-moment Vidal Sassoon haircut (“Don’t you like it?”), Rosemary is a portrait of a woman, perhaps society, committed to doing what’s “Right”. In the end, her constant commitment to being the “good girl” has led her down the darkest path of all.

Artwork by Aaron Duarte for The Eye of Faith

Being obsessive fans of the film’s decor, it was such a treat to stumble upon “Rosemary’s Baby: Devilish Decor” on Nowness.com! The site always features dynamic and interesting stories in the realm of art, design, film, and fashion, but the celebration of Mia Farrow’s 67th birthday with a hillarious How-To for Satanist’ provided by blogging duo Unahppy Hipsters is just what Doctor Sapperstein ordered!

Gotta give it to Richard Sylbet for being so on-point with the yellow for 1968, considering the film would have started production at least a year before! Thanks Unhappy Hipsters and Nowness for this dangerous delight!

Artwork by Aaron Duarte for The Eye of Faith.

“All the while Rosemary is remaking the apartment to suit her needs, the building (and its inhabitants) are remaking her to suit theirs, which makes her choices of bright white walls and sunny yellow fabrics seem at first hopeful, then increasingly creepy.”

Sincerely,
