The Future is Now! Retro 90s Sci Fi on the A/W 2018 Runways…

Back in 1999 a quirky cool show came out called ZENON: Girl of the 21st Century and now that we are actually in the 21st century its cool to see they weren’t so far off!

We always say the past informs our future, so when speaking on this idea of retro-futurism its so fun to notice visions of the future from the past, and usually in this context we speak often of a retro-future from the 40s, 50s, even 60s . . .but now we are seeing retro-future ideas taken from the 90s.

Jeremy Scott really took it there 100% with this vibe in his Autumn-Winter 2018 collection from the pastel millenial metallic palette with strokes of neon… to some really quirky weird sci-fi silhouettes.

The wigs brought me back to another 90s sci-fi gem which may be a bit more obscure unless you lived in Canada than guaranteed you watched this show if you grew up in the 90s: SPACE CASES!!!

The show first aired back in 1996, and has since stuck in our minds as a really rad adventure series featuring some cool talent. I think the plot was best summed up by Bethany on IMDB:

One day at an academy, 7 people sneak aboard a mysterious spaceship. The people consist of 5 students, who are Harlan, the athletic leader from earth; Catalina, the Saturnian rainbow-head with a sonic scream; Bova, the negative sour-pus Uranian who can generate electricity; Rosie, the happy Mercurian who radiates heat; and Radu, the Andromedan with super strength and hearing; the other two people are Mrs. T.J. Davenport, the principal at the academy and Commander Seth Goddard, who is their teacher/commander. While on-board they meet an android named Thelma who informs them that they are on a spaceship that is half living and called the Christa. Just when they meet up they become aware that they are approaching a hole that if they get sucked into, they will be stuck in space for 7 years. They eventually do and along their journey they encounter many hardships and enemies that they work together to overcome. They also meet some new people like Suzee (Catalina’s imaginary friend from another dimension who gets pulled into this dimension during a warp, putting Catalina in her dimension; she can read minds and has gills), Elmira (Sponge daughter of Warlard Shank), Warlard Shank (the arch enemy of them), etc.

Thorough analysis. Thank you Bethany.

The wigs immediately gave me some serious Jewel Staite as Catalina vibes; although, hers is just that much more with the multi-colored rings representing her home planet Saturn. Am I wrong?

Oh, and sorry about the strange captions in the two photos there. They are entertaining, nonetheless. Since it is a more obscure show, it was hard to find some great images, but I think you get the vibe, and especially with a few of the looks from Jeremy Scott’s AW 2018 show sandwiched between- I think the inspirations are undeniable!

Boy, Canadian television in the 90s was wicked…and man, Jeremy Scott’s interns must have been binge watching some serious shit, because you can’t deny that the painted ladies of Jeremy Scott’s Moschino Autumn-Winter 2018 show really give me crazy Rosie comparisons!

Granted, Jeremy Scott’s inspiration for this collection was Jackie-O, Aliens, and Conspiracy Theories so its not that far off…

Some other designers you can’t deny took a very similar route were Prada:

And, Maison Margiela Couture Autmn-Winter 2018 which was a symphony of hologram! Our jaws were dropethed watching one look after another walk down the runway.

If you have a chance, watch the actual show so you can see how magically these fabrics react to light- its magnificent and really shows the art of textile design and the incredible things being engineered today.

{Watch the Maison Margiela Couture Autumn-Winter 2018 Show}

Since we are on this topic, I wanted to throw in some pics of a few more Canadian 90s aliens from the cult show ARE YOU AFRAID OF THE DARK? – episode: “The Thirteenth Floor”!!!

Two kids get lured by stylish 90s aliens to a strange toy company that just happened to open on the 13th floor of their apartment complex where they usually play floor hockey…moral of the story is, if you think its weird a toy company opened overnight on the 13th floor of your apartment complex then just stay away!!! Especially when they’re dressed like that!

Never would I have imagined in 20 years I’d be talking about Are You Afraid of the Dark or Space Cases in the context of fashion and style…its actually kind of shocking how many designers landed on this vibe, but nevertheless its really interesting to have this kind of nostalgia prevalent in the scene, and no doubt we will be seeing more and more of this as time goes on.

The {past} repeats itself, even if that {past} is imitating the {future}!

Something about this vibe has always been in us, and we have been tending to lean towards this style many times – from metallic foil shirts, to PVC jackets, and definitely anything hologram! I guess, we like to be ahead of the curve, and it really goes to show the power in staying relevant with the past.

Here are a few pieces in our {SHOP} right now that epitomize the 90s Back to the Future vibe that is taking over!

HAPPY HALLOWEEN! Music Minute: “Perdita” by Rubber City (D. Lynch & D. Slusser)

We gave a mention to this seminal 1990s David Lynch classic in one our latest posts, a reblog from The Selvedge Yard regarding the September 1991 photo spread in American Vogue entitled “Wild at Heart”.

For me, it was easy to see the title as a reference to Lynch’s film of the same name, released just a year prior to the shoot, and winner of accolades that included the Palm D’Or (an equivalent to Best Picture at the Academy Awards) at the Cannes Film Festival in 1990.

The film stars Nicolas Cage as Sailor Ripley and a radiant Laura Dern at her sexiest as the dangerous bombshell Lula Pace Fortune. The film plays out like a rebel fantasy, with plenty of allusion to The Wizard of Oz (this has been admitted by Lynch himself who idolized the film as a child), as well as Elvis Presley, 50s youth culture, and the American Dream.

It’s nothing and everything it promises to be, and is perhaps my ultimate favorite film of the American auteur. And as for style savvy, the film has got it in spades. Check out those shades on Nic Cage in the top photograph (I used to have a pair exactly like those that had been given to me by a friend) – classic rebel style, shaking it up by ditching the frames altogether and letting that gold bar along the brow do all the hard work.

And, of course there is the rebel snake skin jacket donned by Sailor, which is seen in the film’s most iconic moments. It seems the sssss-seductive look could have taken inspiration from one of cinema’s most famous bad boys – Marlon Brando, who wore a similar snake skin jacket in the forgotten 1960 classic “The Fugitive Kind” directed by Sidney Lumet.

Brando plays Val Xavier, a sexy, down on his luck convenience store clerk who finds temptation in both his boss (the talented Ana Magnani), and the town’s local wild child, played by a young and ravishing Joanne Woodward. The film is being discovered again for it’s crushing performances, moody black and white photography, and brash, bold direction.

It goes to show that everything has its precedence, and discovering the links make for a richer understanding of the landscape we visit.

We pulled this track from the film’s soundtrack to share with you all in a music minute that promises to mill about deep within you, and scatter your thoughts to the darkest and most beautiful corners of your subconscious…

Don’t be scared, though; It’s just a little music to keep you going throughout the long and arduous days and nights…As Lula says:

“This whole world’s wild at heart and weird on top.”

So let’s just drive…

Until next time,

Francis Bacon, Study for Portrait on Folding Bed (1963)

The latest exhibit from the AGO gives us Moore with a side of Bacon, and we want seconds!

Francis Bacon & Henry Moore: Terror and Beauty” which runs at the AGO from April 5 to July 20 is a compelling retrospective overview of the two artists’ parallel lives and works, and how they were affected by the evolving world around them. Impacted by war, society, and religion, their works went on the become some of the cornerstones of modern art, and the images we see in our mind when we think of it.

Francis Bacon, Study for Portrait VI (1953)

We have always been huge fans of Francis Bacon’s work so it was such a treat to get to see some of his most iconic and monumental pieces in plain sight. His use of colour and his treatment of form are to this day as raw and exciting as they were over fifty years ago when they first made their premiere to the world at large. His vivid triptych, with its monolithic expanse, as well as his haunting portrait and studies of the Pope are alive with wonder, and indeed, beauty and terror.

Henry Moore, Falling Warrior (1956 – 57)

No stranger to the work of Henry Moore, the AGO has always housed an impressive collection of his work since first stepping foot in the museum as a child, and has since remained a pleasure to gaze at. His contorted figures which resonate with an almost ancient wisdom and mystic mystery were given new life juxtaposed amongst Bacon’s equally amorphous figures and mysterious backdrops.

Curator Dan Adler has done an excellent job of showcasing equally the similarities and discrepancies between the two artists, and is sure to bring fresh views on both artists’ life and works.

Not only does the show offer a comprehensive and distinct juxtaposition of the artists, it also lends the viewer a greater vision of the world as a whole, and how history and the events therein contribute to the creation of our culture.

Some of the most stunning, but quiet works include Moore’s beautiful depictions of sleeping figures inspired by the surrealistic memories of the thousands of people who made their ways to the underground during the London Blitz.

???????? Elephant-and-Castle-tube-station-during-the-Blitz

These sketches, and photographs of London during the blitz provide further insight into our own world today, and the devastating affects they have had on our society, and the musings these travesties have inspired.

The most interesting thing about the show was that although the artists’ aesthetic similarities are plain to see, it is impossible to ignore the individual voice of the artists and seeing the differences between the two. The mind easily deciphers them, and while so much in their lives run parallel, I never felt like there was a true intersection. Henry Moore was very much in his realm, and Bacon very much in his, and it’s these differences that really sing throughout your time walking amongst the spaces filled with their individual iconographies.

We hold them both very close to our hearts now, and no doubt, our soul will be pumping with the inspiration the AGO has brought forward with this exquisite showing of two of the world’s finest architects of the mind.

We also can’t wait for what they have in store for us next!

{MUSIC MINUTE} “Ouija Board, Ouija Board” by MORRISSEY

Vintage Morrissey and his typewriter - style and mens fashion - the eye of faith

There’s a saying that goes:  “You either have it, or you don’t”.

And although, most people these days would love to believe they have it, there is definitely one person you can look back on and say they did “have it”, and equally today too, we are still singing their praises – MORRISSEY.

That sweet croon, and wicked wild hair-do, not to mention that beautiful romantic new wave styling he was always sporting. Striped and houndstooth blazers were never a challenge. Always a little stripped down and casual, that’s the rockstar in him.

Hordes of Mexican teens have adopted him as their Jesus, and Carrie Bradshaw’s little sister has a hamster named MORRISSEY on “The Carrie Diaries”. He’s definitely not one of those forgotten ones.

Young Morrissey -Vintage Mens Fashion Style- the eye of faith

We came across this lovely wonder, and decided immediately to make it our latest {MUSIC MINUTE}. If you’ve never heard it, you might be expecting something a little creepy from the title, but the song gives a lot more love and tenderness than you might ever expect from a song called “Ouija Board, Ouija Board”.

The record needle is currently hovering over anything and everything with an occult theme, so whether it was today, or twenty years ago, this song is destined to be a, dare I say it, cult classic.

Please enjoy this very special {MUSIC MINUTE}!

Rebel Yell with a Touch of Evil: Miharayasuhiro Men S/S13

We are moved by the beautiful designs coming from Miharayasuhiro. Inspired by David Lynch’s “Wild at Heart” and the python jacket Nicolas Cage wore in the film, Mihara Yasuhiro’s appealingly offbeat collection is having the fashion crowd singing praises. And here @TheEyeOfFaith, we are feeling this!

Rockabilly Preppy Goth dudes splashed in paint, some head to toe, made for a truly easy-chic vibe with an edge normally seen with Links and Chains in Nashville. We saw Hairdo’s that have got us combing our hair differently. We love love love the collection overall. Lots of variety with some stark-hard subtly.

We bring you a series of backstage shots by Dirk Alexander from Models.com.  We can envision ourselves sliding into any one of these looks.  Cool simple colour story, lots of beige and white’s mixed with leather’s and black mesh.  A James Dean Rebel red Members Only jacket sets the tone for the whole collection.  We are feeling a Fight Club feel for 2013 with the forever stylish Python.  This is a collection that for SURE stands out this season.
