Get That Vintage Irish Autumn Glam!

Steal the Limelight in Autumn Fashion . . .

BlogAutumnMain_large

In Ireland, the fall season runs from September to November. According to The Irish Times, now is the perfect opportunity to make a dramatic entrance with a flowing psychedelic skirt, colorful silk separates, and those wonderfully knitted tops. As summer fades from the picture, take some time to carry out your turtle neck sweaters with lush layers, and then finish the entire look with long trench coats.

To unleash your inner 50s heroine, take inspiration from Irish fashion and style icon Deirdre Morrissey. Whether vintage or avant-garde,  Deirdre is known for her fearless approach to fashion. That said, here are some pieces that you can mix and match for that over the top Irish glam.

Long trench coats

Sporting long trench coats with a profusion of prints and chunky textures is the common style dilemma, especially for the petites. There’s nothing to worry, though, as you just need to make sure that you’re not swamping yourself with large clothes. Proportion is the key. You need to consider the shape and cut of the pieces that you would wear. In Ireland, most shops are only offering clothes for taller heights. But in the big high-end streets, M&S is selling long trench coats specifically designed and cut in different symmetries for the petites.

Colorful silk prints

The classic autumn Irish fashion is characterized by the combination of colors, prints, and layers. In fact, these trends are lurking back to the present fashion scene. According to Curator and Producer Sonia Reynolds of Showcaseireland.com, these distinctive and colorful prints appeal to many women, which is why they are the inspirations for next year’s Showcase Fashion. In dealing with prints, it’s best to not go overboard as this will engulf your small frame. Meanwhile, using fabrics with straight lines will create a longer silhouette. In this case, pencil skirts and knitted A-line dresses are worth trying.

Accessories

Today, accessories are the simplest routes in venturing into a new season, and, of course, a new fashion era. Perhaps the most used accessory by a 50’s Irish lass is a clip on or handheld bag. This type of bag is perfect for on the go women, giving them instant access to their essentials. When picking the right clip on bag, it’s always best to choose a design with plain colors.

After all, the true essence of Irish fashion is simplicity and style.

In 1995, 400 suitcases were recovered from the attic of the Willard State Asylum in Upstate New York. Many patients died at the asylum and were buried in graves marked only by numbers. For many, these suitcases are the only traces left of these sad, lost, and lonely lives.

Dating between 1910 and 1960, photographer Jon Crispin has begun the chilling endeavour of cataloguing each suitcase and the contents therein. These people were deemed unfit for society, but Crispin’s photographs reveal a tragic humanity to the individuals whose memory remain in the mysterious objects and photos in these many bags and luggages.

Being the lovers of mystery we are, we couldn’t help but share some of these photos with you here, and the strange enigma they leave for us to ponder.
